Remdesivir
Remdesivir (RDV, GS-5734) is a broad-spectrum antiviral nucleotide prodrug with potent in vitro antiviral activity against a diverse panel of RNA viruses such as Ebola virus (EBOV), Marburg, MERS-CoV, SARS-CoV, respiratory syncytial virus, Nipah virus, Hendra virus, and possibly SARS-CoV-2 (the virus causing Covid-19 pandemic). Remdesivir is an adenosine analogue, which incorporates into nascent viral RNA chains and results in pre-mature termination. Remdesivir is metabolized into its active form, GS-441524, that obscures viral RNA polymerase and evades proofreading by viral exonuclease, causing a decrease in viral RNA production. In-vitro studies showed that remdesivir can inhibit coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV replication.
