Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is a thiazide diuretic that inhibits the apical membrane sodium chloride cotransporter in the distal and collecting duct nephron segments. Diuretics, including HCTZ, have been abused as performance-enhancing drugs and masking agents in sports doping.
